Q&A Survey Responses
Frequently Asked Questions:
  • I cannot send mail and I do not use NCATS for my internet access
For those users whom have ncats.net email addresses, check their email with a client like outlook express, and DO NOT use NCATS Internet service, sending mail using an NCATS server is not allowed without authentication. The following directions will allow you to use our outgoing mail server:

(Only applies to non NCATS Internet users such as AT&T DSL or Comcast/Charter Cable Customers)
1: Set outgoing mail (smtp) to use port 587 instead of 25
    2: Enable SMTP Authentication.

  • I just received a notice that I was sent a Virus. What do I do?
Nothing. The virus filter on the NCATS server automatically cleans incoming viruses to prevent them from getting into your machine. It also sends a notice to anyone who sent you the virus, letting them know they are infected. To find out more click here

  • How to I block Junk Mail using NCATS?
NCATS offers Junk Mail filtering using our SPAM Filter. SPAM Blocker is located here

  • I am trying to setup my email and it is asking me for a POP3 server. What is that?
Both the POP3 server and the SMTP server are for your email with NCATS. Just make sure that you put mail.ncats.net for both places (POP3 and SMTP). mail.ncats.net is the name of our server that handles your email.

  • Why am I having problems connecting ?
There are many factors in achieving a good dial-up connection to the Internet. Everything from a mis-typed username and password, RF interference, bad modem drivers, rotted phone lines, or a simple disconnected phone jack can interfere with your NCATS connection. We recommend that if you are experiencing an issue connecting to NCATS that you document all error messages, time of the problem(s), and give our Tech Support a call. Our Computer Repair service might also be able to help with your computer's needs.

  • Everytime I send and receive messages in Outlook Express I get disconnected. What is wrong?
To disable automatic hang-ups after sending and receiving open Outlook Express, select Tools from the menu bar, and click on Options. A new Window will appear. Select the "Connection" tab, and uncheck the box that says "Hang up after sending and receiving." Click Apply, and then OK.

  • What are your Dial-In numbers?
NCATS has 3 different Dial-In numbers. 924-1980, 924-2727, and 924-2424. Click here to view the number of users currently connected to our numbers.

  • I am getting Error #691. Why can't I connect?
Error 691 is the incorrect username or password error. You may have incorrectly typed your username and password, or you might be late with your payment. If are unable to connect, please call our Tech Support.

  • Why does my computer keep saying "No Dial-Tone."
First check to see if the phone line is plugged into the back of your computer. If it is, but you are still unable to get a dial-tone, your modem may not be working properly. Please call our Tech Support, or setup a Computer Repair appointment.

  • Why can’t I open any attachments in Outlook Express?
Open Outlook Express, select Tools form the menu bar, and click Options. A new Window will appear. Select the “security” tab, and uncheck the back that says “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.” Click Apply, and then OK
